How comebacks are counted

Where the data comes from, which rules apply in each era, and every case that breaks the rule.

Where the data comes from

  • Source. Each season’s pages on the English Wikipedia. For every match we read its report and, inside it, every goal with its minute.
  • Coverage. 71 seasons, from 1955-56 to 2025-26: 1,545 knockout ties and 1,056 group-stage or league-phase campaigns. Qualifying rounds are excluded.
  • Quality control. A match only enters the by-minute figures if its timed goals add up exactly to the official score. Those that do not are listed below.
  • Clubs. A club is identified by its Wikipedia article, not by the name on display: Internazionale and Inter Milan are the same club.

What a comeback is

The starting definition: at minute 75 of the deciding match you were going out, and you still went through. The tool lets you change the minute and the other conditions.

  • The goal at the cut-off minute counts. Stoppage-time goals of that minute do not: with the cut at 90, a goal at 90+3 comes later. The cut at 105 is half-time of extra time.
  • Deciding match. In knockouts, the second leg; the play-off if there was one; the final. In groups, the club’s last match.
  • Going out, in knockouts. Behind on aggregate or, with the aggregate level, behind on away goals while the rule applied. If everything was level, nobody was going out.
  • Going out, in groups. Outside the qualifying places in the live table: earlier matches in full and all of that day’s matches cut at the same minute.
  • Exactly at that minute, or later. The first option looks at that instant only. The second also counts a club that fell behind later in that match and turned it around.
  • Rate. Comebacks divided by the times the club was going out. In groups, only the times it still had a mathematical chance before the matchday count.
  • Two kinds of group comeback. The club improved its own result after the cut-off, or another match sent it through. The second only counts if the box is ticked.

Rules that change with the era

RuleHow it is applied
Who won a tieThe club that plays again that season. It is not derived from the score, because there were coin tosses and boardroom rulings. The final, by score and penalties.
Away goalsFirst round only in 1967-68; rounds before the quarter-finals in 1968-69 and 1969-70; every round from 1970-71 to 2020-21; none since 2021-22.
Play-offIf there was a third match, it decides and only its goals count.
Points for a win in groups2 until 1994-95; 3 since 1995-96.
Level on points in groupsSince 1995-96, head-to-head first and then overall goal difference. Before that, overall goal difference and goals.
Best runners-upIn 1997-98 and 1998-99 the six group winners and the two best runners-up go through.
League phase (since 2024-25)A single table; going through means finishing in the top 24.
Two group stages (1999-2000 to 2002-03)Each one counts separately.

What is left out and what is assumed

  • Qualifying does not count. Neither the qualifying rounds nor, between 1992 and 1994, the preliminary round. The old preliminary round (1956-1982) does: it was part of the tournament.
  • In groups, only each club’s last matchday is examined. A comeback on an earlier matchday, however decisive, is not measured yet.
  • Assumption: same-day matches are simultaneous. True for the modern final matchday; in older seasons kick-off times could differ.
  • Assumption: the away-goals years. Set from the known history of the rule; no tie in the data contradicts them.
  • Assumption: the group tie-breaker before 1999. Both criteria give the same final qualifiers, so the data cannot tell which applied. It can only affect the live table in those years.
  • Check. In all 248 groups, the computed final table gives exactly the clubs that went through in reality.

Special cases, one by one
